“A rthur,” Merlin pleaded, “I’ve come here again, and I think this will be the last time. I will not abuse our friendship anymore. If you choose not to return after this, I will respect your wish, and we shall part as kin.”

For the first time since Merlin had been coming to see his cousin, he noticed a smile emerge from Arthur’s face. Arthur nodded as if to permit him one last attempt to speak.

“Whatever the world needs of you is no longer material. The world outside burns, but it will always burn, for that is life, is it not? Ashes turn to dust, dust turns to life. What burns today is merely an echo of eternity that has been burning on since creation. So, forgive me for stubbornly holding on to the hope that you will leave Starhearth and return to a broken world.”

Arthur sat silently for several long moments before speaking. “If not to pester me for the last time, then why do you come?”

Merlin smiled, realizing that Arthur's humor, while somewhat murky, was harmless.

“I come to wish you peace and let you begin your journey. Do not misunderstand. Do we need you? Yes. Can we fix what is going on in our broken world? No. I will leave Demetia and Britannia after this, cross to Paris, and then continue to the East. My life will not be under the heel of a man such as Attila.”

“I can feel your pain, Merlin. If it were I who sat in your place, and had to return to a world ruled by the most evil of men, I too would rather take to the open road and let it carry me as far away as possible,” Arthur said.

Merlin nodded.

“Then why did you earlier try to convince me to return? Britannia is lost.”

“Yes, but Britannia is just the beginning. You and I live in a world that is governed by righteousness and equity. We live by a code of honor that is passed from father to son, mother to daughter. We die under the weight of being judged for our faults and so refrain from committing them in the mortal realm below. But the man who seeks to rule the world has no such compass, no such heart. He wishes to rule it all and burn it down in the process. If he were any other enemy, I would have let you go in peace. You deserve the rest, Arthur. Believe me when I tell you that. But this is no ordinary enemy. Even the bowels of hell will refuse to permit this creature entry when his day shall come.”

Arthur raised his hand, motioning him to stop.

“Wait, I am not done. Please, I am not forcing you, but I am telling you what I’m about to do.”

Arthur lowered his hand.

“I will travel east, beyond Attila’s clutches, and I will find a way to come back and vanquish him. It will be monumentally harder, but right now, I am tired, and I need time to think and train.
